Census Campaign - donate

This is the latest British Humanist Association campaign. The census form for 2011 is repeating the ill worded question on religion only for the third time. It is crucial that those who are not believers says so clearly. It is so evident from the last census that many people ticked Christian as a cultural affiliation rather than a committed belief in religion and the supernatural. Since the government are refusing to alter this it is crucial that the non-religious make sure that they are properly represented. The current data is used to justify religious/faith schools/BBC programming and other services being funded by the government and taxpayers.

on religion.

In the UK, those who profess no-religion have risen from 31% to 43% between 1983 according to the BSA the British attitudes Survey.

    Hi Jeanne

This is also interesting from an Irish perspective as there is one coming up in April next year. In the last few census forms there was no box for “no religion”. Instead one had to tick the “other” box which could mean anything, e.g. Scientology, Mormonism etc. etc.

I hope British agnostics and atheists do tick the right box this time and I Ireland that we have the option of “no religion”
