Graveney Consultation on applying to become an academy.

Dear Governors,

Please do NOT pander to the coalition government’s push for this odious policy of getting schools to opt out of local authority control, to be in fierce competition with other local schools and to expand the privatisation of public services which is the main thrust of ALL their policies.

Graveney School has been much lauded as a school that gives a broad education without selection. I have had the privilege of being invited into the school to speak to some sixth form groups recently about Humanism and was impressed by their ability to speak up and speak out.

As a former school Governor in Wandsworth I am amazed that any governing body would be prepared to become an academy and take on the responsibilitiesof running a school without the support of the local authority but using private, profit making companies to take over the management.- organisation like ARK which was only established in 2006  which will run the Bolingbroke Academy. Please don’t let Graveney join the ‘dog eat dog’ ethos that will ensue where it is those who must need good schools who will lose out.

As a Humanist I am most concerned about the setting up of religious based schools and aware that the setting up of free schools/academies is the start of something nasty in educational apartheid based on religion or middle class selection/gerrymandering.
Please don’t join in the rush to join the Toby Youngs and religious extremists.

Yours sincerely,

Jeanne Rathbone
