Cats and dogs – some differences

Posted in Cats and dogs differences by sheelanagigcomedienne on November 30, 2011

On my walk on Clapham Common today – a glorious autumnal day- there were a  lot of dog walkers noisily calling their errant pets.  Besides dogs coming in various sizes  one big difference between cat and dog owners – cat folk hardly inflict our moggies on the general public in the same way as doggy people do as their pet appendages  bark, sniff us, are being yelled at and called by their monikers loudly fight with each other and bark up the wrong tree as they chase the squirrels thus disturbing a peaceful walk.  I do not engage with dogs, dog owners or chuggers by giving them an acknowledging smile.

I’ve checked some of the many sites for dog names alone. Today I was accosted by one whose owner said pointedly to her excited little yapper ‘Betty NOT everyone loves you’ .

Our cats names have been chosen by our eldest our daughter. We’ve had (1) Percy, (Percy is the name of the cat in Hockneys picture of Mr and Mrs Clark)  Jacky, Minaloushe from the Yeats poem.

by: W. B. Yeats (1865-1939)

HE cat went here and there
And the moon spun round like a top,
And the nearest kin of the moon,
The creeping cat, looked up.
Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
For, wander and wail as he would,
The pure cold light in the sky
Troubled his animal blood.
Minnaloushe runs in the grass
Lifting his delicate feet.
Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
When two close kindred meet,
What better than call a dance?
Maybe the moon may learn,
Tired of that courtly fashion,
A new dance turn.
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
From moonlit place to place,
The sacred moon overhead
Has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
Will pass from change to change,
And that from round to crescent,
From crescent to round they range?
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
Alone, important and wise,
And lifts to the changing moon
His changing eyes.
Incidently, we also used a Yeats poem to name our middle child AENGUS
The song of wandering Aengus

by: W.B. Yeats

WENT out to the hazel wood,
Because a fire was in my head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And hooked a berry to a thread;
And when white moths were on the wing,
And moth-like stars were flickering out,
I dropped the berry in a stream
And caught a little silver trout.
When I had laid it on the floor
I went to blow the fire a-flame,
But something rustled on the floor,
And some one called me by my name:
It had become a glimmering girl
With apple blossom in her hair
Who called me by my name and ran
And faded through the brightening air.
Though I am old with wandering
Through hollow lands and hilly lands,
I will find out where she has gone,
And kiss her lips and take her hands;
And walk among long dappled grass,
And pluck till time and times are done
The silver apples of the moon,
The golden apples of the sun.

Then along came Sappho, a lovely Siamese and our Irish cat Grainne  named after the pirate Queen Grainneuaile. Now we have a kitten called Nero who lives with us but is Barbara’s. He was erroneouly called Errata to begin with as her owner said she was a lively female.  He is NERO because he is black not, as a colleague observed to Barbara , because she often gets a coffee from cafe Nero.

Top Cat Names

This page of the site lists the top 10 and the top 40 names for boy and girl cats as chosen by people, specifically cat lovers, in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

So they are easy to find, the names are listed by most popular, not alphabetically, and as you read and search, you’ll notice that many listed for male cats could be used for females and visa versa. The good thing too is that the names are perfect for, and will fit, all breeds of cats, and any kind of personality.

Interestingly enough, traditional names, and recent names from favorite movie and TV cats, pets, and kittens continue to make the yearly top list which means some of them are quite common, but others are refreshingly different and unique.

It is also interesting to note, that many of the top cat names on the lists are human names. Often a kitty that is called by a “‘human-type” name tends to have a special relationship with its owner, who often regards their furry feline as their best friend, or surrogate child. Any animal, but especially a cat recently saved through adoption, or in need special care or company, can also have a special meaning for their owners.
